Since most gamers now own mobile devices, smart TVs, and set-top boxes, Valve discontinued the hardware version in favor of an app-based solution. It came along with Valve’s now-defunct Steam Machine initiative. It allowed you to stream your Steam library from a host PC on the same network. Initially, Steam Link was a $50 set-top box that you connected to your TV. Steam Link lets you stream games from your gaming rig to a mobile device, and it’s (finally) back on Apple’s App Store! On Android, Steam Link will be launching as a beta. You can literally fling your Steam Link hardware away and use an Apple TV if you have one beginning May 21. I’ve mentioned iOS devices above and it is fantastic that Valve is including Apple TV as well. Unlike Steam Link, Steam Video will even work over LTE (cellular). You will be able to store videos purchased on Steam offline on your iOS or Android devices. Steam Video on the other hand will even offer something the actual Steam app does not as of this moment.
This is pretty much a game changer for the larger iPad when coupled with a controller. Steam Link will support the Steam Controller, MFI controllers, and more on iOS and Android.
The other aspect is that they aren’t half assing this. For one, the vast catalogue of visual novels and interactive point and click adventure games will now be playable on mobile. Steam Link is a huge deal for a lot of reasons.
