You must collect XP (experience points) and items to defeat the other team by destroying their ‘Ancient’, which is a large structure on their base. Cores, on the other hand, start off weak but gain in strength and power until they can ‘carry’ the whole team (hence their sometimes being called ‘Carries’). Supports are useful, if somewhat lightweight providing solid back-up without any exciting powers. Heroes are divided into two loose groups: Cores (also called Carries) and supports. There are 121 of these unique characters altogether (see below for a sample of some of them).
Each of the ten players controls a unique hero each with their own skills and abilities. In the game you are divided into teams of five and battle against another similar team – all these warring groups of ten are in distinct places on the map. It is one of the very few popular games that is truly communal, having been conceived, tested and released on community fora. Dota 2 is a multiplayer online battle arena game (MOBA), a sequel to Dota, which stands for Defence of the Ancients, which itself arose from Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos.
